Top Nationwide Boating Destinations

By: The Staff at Sterling Acceptance

One of the best and true sources of experience is word of mouth from people you can trust; that’s why we asked our staff here at Sterling Acceptance what their favorite places to go boating were. We would like to pass their feedback on to you, and hope you can make it out to enjoy these wonderful destinations, as much as we do! In this article, you will find a few of our owner’s favorite places to visit, and our Florida West Coast Sales Manager, Susan Cunningham’s recommendations.

First we will start out with one of the top picks from our owners, Karen & Dave Trostle. They do most of their boating in the Maryland area, and one of their favorite places to visit is Tilghman Island, located at 38°42′32″N76°20′6″W. This small town offers a charming, slow pace atmosphere, sure to help you relax while enjoying the “old-time” Eastern Shore living experience. Filled with excellent waterfront dining, lighthouse tours, charters, shopping, and museums, Tilghman Island makes for a great family get away. Karen & Dave enjoy the trip so much, they scheduled our annual company boat outing here in August 2015 and our staff loved exploring the small town with beautiful views!

Moving south down the East Coast, our Florida West Coast Sales Manager, Susan Cunningham, shares a few of her favorite and most memorable destinations. Here is what Susan has to say:

“My first true cruising experience after moving to Florida, and the most memorable, was in the Abacos and the surrounding islands of the Bahamas. Hopetown Harbor on Long Island was home base for exploring Long Island, Green Turtle, Man-O-War, Allens-Pensacola and Great Guana Cays. The picturesque small town where no vehicles were allowed, with the exception of the fire truck, was quaint, safe and delightful. My favorite T-shirt read 'In case of fire, get key from Vernon’s Grocery'. Long Island, being on average two miles wide but 80 miles from tip to tip has the drama of the ocean on one side and the beauty of the Caribbean in walking distance to the other side. A return trip is a must for me.”

The Pre-Approval Advantage

February 26, 2016

Getting a pre-approval before you start searching for a boat or RV to purchase is something that will really come in handy. It saves you from wasted time and frustration by looking at units that are unaffordable. Also, your offers are more likely to be accepted by sellers when they know you are already pre-approved and have your financing in order!

Below is a list of reasons why you should get a pre-approval with Sterling Acceptance Corporation:

  • No up-front application fees
  • With a pre-approval application we can run credit to pre-qualify you and also provide you with an estimate of how much you can afford
  • Rates good for as long as 60 days
  • Approvals good for up to 6 months
  • Save time by looking at boats and RVs in your price range
  • Enjoy a faster closing

Many brokers & dealers have expressed their frustration of negotiating a sale of a vessel only to find out that their buyer is not qualified. Avoid this pitfall! Talk with the professionals of Sterling Acceptance today! We will make sure the buying process is seamless and enjoyable by providing guidance for you at every step of the way.

Q&A With Karen Trostle

Karen Feb 2016

Recently, Reagan Hayes of Soundings Trade Only Today interviewed Karen regarding why she started Sterling Acceptance Corporation in 1987 and her thoughts on the recreational finance and marine industries today. The Q&A session will be featured in the February 2016 edition of their magazine. Here is a little insight to the interview:

Q: Can you tell me how you got started and what led you to form your own company?
A: I started at Maryland National Bank at a branch in Annapolis right out of school. I started as a clerk typist working in the floorplanning area, which included cars, boats and motorcycles, and I worked my way up. I became a manager in the area and was transferred to the consumer banking division in College Park and Rockville.Soon I was with child and doing some traveling for the bank. I was transferred to the boat loan department in Annapolis, where we did credit and sales and floorplanning for marine. I wound up being a vice president of the sales operation.
I was traveling a bunch because we had 12 loan production offices around the country. And I just thought, you know, I really can’t do this with a small child, but then thought, I bet I could do this myself, knowing that I had a lot of dealer contacts. I started my own service company, Sterling Acceptance Corp., in 1987, so I’ve been in business going on 29 years now.

Q: What about the health of consumers? Has it been long enough for some of the unfavorable credit fallout to go away? Do you think there will be at least a small population of people who, say, had a short sale in 2009 but have otherwise maintained good credit and financial health who will come back to the market as they can qualify for more favorable loans?
A: I believe so. Right now, if a short-sale history is in the credit report, most lenders will not do the loan. But after seven years — that’s the statute of limitations — they will disappear from their credit history. So as time goes by, assuming they have good credit since, their credit scores will go up and it is likely they will be able to borrow again.
You know there are subprime, tier 2 and tier 3 loans available today from some banks. If you have shown you’ve recovered and you’re stable, you’ve got money in the bank and your credit has been good since then, you can get a loan.

Looking Towards The Future: Generation X and Y's Importance

September 11, 2015
By: Heather Cavey

There are three major demographics that boat manufacturers and dealers should be concerned about. The oldest is the baby boomers, who are around the ages of 51 to 69 in 2015. This generation is the current largest demographic that is buying boats. The middle generation is Generation X, who are around the ages of 35 to 50 in 2015. This group has the largest spending power but is greatly overlooked because they are not a large population. Finally, we have the millennials (also known as Generation Y), who are around the ages of 18 to 34 in 2015. Out of the three groups, this has the largest population. According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, by the end of 2015, there will be an estimated 75.3 million millennials, which will surpass 74.9 million boomers. Generation X is not expected to surpass the boomer population until 2028.

When the baby boomer population decreases due to deaths, the target market will change to Generation X and the millennials. Experts don’t recommend that manufacturers and dealers wait until that decrease in boomers comes to target those younger generations because it could be too late.
